Lesson 7: Cuatro Care: Keeping Your Fretboard in Top Shape

Fretboard Cuatro Puertorriqueño

Maintaining the cleanliness of your cuatro puertorriqueño fretboard is essential for optimal playability and prolonging the lifespan of your instrument. Here is a simple guide on how to clean it.

Materials: You will need a soft cloth, a toothbrush with soft bristles, and lemon oil (specifically designed for fretboards).

  • Remove the Strings: Before you start cleaning, it's recommended to remove all the strings from the cuatro. This allows for easier access to the entire fretboard.
  • Wipe it Down: Use the soft cloth to wipe down the fretboard, removing any surface dirt and dust. Cleaning Solution: Apply a small amount of the guitar cleaner to the toothbrush.
  •  Dry the Fretboard: Once you've thoroughly cleaned the fretboard, use a dry cloth to wipe off any excess cleaning solution and let it dry completely.
  • Apply Lemon Oil: After drying, apply the lemon oil sparingly to the fretboard. This will help condition the wood and prevent it from drying out.
  • Let it Absorb: Allow the oil to absorb for approximately 15 minutes, then wipe away any excess with a clean cloth.
  • Restring the Cuatro: Once the fretboard is dry, you can restring your cuatro puertorriqueño.
