Don Julio Negrón Rivera, a master craftsman from Morovis, Puerto Rico, began his journey into the world of music and craftsmanship at the tender age of 11. Under the careful tutelage of his father, he learned to build and play the cuatro puertorriqueño, a traditional Puerto Rican stringed instrument.

Don Julio's early cuatros were handcrafted using manual tools and rudimentary machinery. He used yagrumo and guaraguao wood, which was locally sourced, to create these musical masterpieces. Due to the painstaking artisanal process, he could only construct two instruments per year.

He drew inspiration from fellow craftsmen, luthiers Don Leopoldo Ortiz from Corozal and Don Carmelo Martel from Utuado. Their influence helped him refine and perfect his technique over time, making him one of the best in his field.

In 1962, Don Julio joined the Craftsmanship Program of the Puerto Rican Institute of Culture (ICP). His exceptional talent and craftsmanship did not go unnoticed. He was recognized in various craft festivals and fairs around the island, earning accolades for his work.

His dedication and skill led him to win the cuatro manufacturing contest organized by the ICP. In 1985, he received the prestigious 'Consecrated Craftsman' award from the National Endowment for the Arts, a testament to his mastery and contribution to the arts.

Don Julio Negrón Rivera, un maestro artesano de Morovis, Puerto Rico, comenzó su viaje en el mundo de la música y la artesanía a la temprana edad de 11 años. Bajo la cuidadosa tutela de su padre, aprendió a construir y tocar el cuatro puertorriqueño, un instrumento de cuerda tradicional de Puerto Rico.

Los primeros cuatros de Don Julio fueron hechos a mano utilizando herramientas manuales y maquinaria rudimentaria.
